- "California Soul" was coined from a Mother Hips song that reflects on the hardships of grinding out a living making music on the road. The phrase was immediately adopted to label the unique sound of the Hips and the many bands they inspired over their 12 year tenure. However California Soul embodies more than simply a sound. It's a lifestyle and culture celebrated in the music halls, on the beaches, and in the mountains across much of the western parts of the United States. When the Hips called it quits at the end of 2002 it was not immediately clear what effect this would have on the strong community of artists, fans, and music professionals that had discovered and embraced California Soul.
