Title

Calling Touches - bell ringing

Description

A little about the author

I started to learn to handle a bell in November 2000 in my first term at Oxford University. I was taught by the Oxford University Society of Change Ringers (the OUS). On returning home that Christmas I found myself a home tower at SS Peter and Paul, Edenbridge where I was also made welcome.

I was lucky to have good ringers around me at both these ringing homes and so my ringing progressed quickly. The other important factor in this was that I rang most nights in the week from summer 2001; the incorrigible Keith Matthews encouraged me in this - thank you Keith! I rang my first quarter peal on 3rd June 2001 (cover to Grandsire Triples) and my first peal on 29th December 2001 (treble to Grandsire Triples).

I first called call changes on a Sunday morning in May 2002 (this was a disaster: it must have taken us more than 10 minutes to get to Queens and back!) and I started to call touches from July 2002. These were mostly of Grandsire Triples which was the main repertoire in the towers at which I was ringing. I called my first quarter peal on 24th November 2002 in Oxford with an all-women's band from the student OUS. This was of Plain Bob Doubles and we were all very pleased to get it.
