Description

Camas Magazine takes its name from the edible wild lily that was a staple for the First Peoples of much of the Pacific Northwest. The camas grounds were common grounds, meeting places among tribes, families and friends. That is the metaphor we draw from this blue-flowered lily of the field. The common ground we hope to help discover is the shared understanding that comes from civil and creative conversations made possible by good information.

Originally conceived as a general interest, regional publication, Camas Magazine staff was confronted with a dilemma in early 2000. When funding for the proposed print publication disappeared, the editors found themselves already on a journey into discovery of a story essential to Spokane's civic, moral and economic health, the River Park Square public/private partnership. This website and the continued reporting on the subject is offered as a public service to the people of Spokane.

"The Worst Parking Space in Spokane," by Tim Connor earned a first-place award in the Society of Professional Journalists Excellence in Journalism competition for Western Washington. Connor's piece, published in the October/November issue of Washington Law & Politics, examines the saga of the River Park Square scandal and how it is affecting the historic relationship between the Cowles family and Spokane's political leadership. The article took first place in the government/political reporting category.
