Canines for Disabled Kids - Service dogs for kids

Description edit

About Canines For Disabled Kids

Canines for Disabled Kids began in 1998 as a natural offshoot of the NEADS assistance dog program. Very few assistance dog programs are willing to provide trained assistance dogs for children under age 12; CDK saw a need and worked to filled it. It was possible to train dogs to help autistic children, children with hearing other physical disabilities and disabled children in the classrooms. In an effort to enhance the education and independence of children with disabilities across the USA, we started to sponsor dogs that would work with the child but with the aid of a parent.

Soon, many applications were coming to the program and, since 1998; CDK has sponsored over 90 assistance dogs, dogs that can help children with different disabilities with their parents as facilitators.

The staff of NEADS, with whom we contract our services, has developed "facility-based education," a training method used with great success today - whereby students develop a strong working relationship with their dog by living and training in a home-like environment on-campus for two weeks, while under the expert supervision of the staff. Children must be a minimum age of 6 years old, physically and cognitively, in order to help encourage a successful partnership.
