As those of us at CarDefender set out to develop a vehicle anti-theft system that was truly effective, we began by looking at possible improvements to existing alarm systems. What we found after careful scrutiny was that alarm systems just don't STOP thieves. Most statistics show that over 80% of car thieves are professionals and know how to get around a starter interrupt. If you think that a car alarm siren is going to protect your vehicle, just ask yourself when was the last time you dropped everything to go investigate someone else's alarm going off. What we discovered is that the methodology followed by car alarms is backwards! A car alarm attempts to disable your vehicle when it believes an unauthorized entry has been made. We believe that a more prudent methodology is to have your vehicle disabled by default and only enable it when you have been identified as an authorized operator. In determining how to implement this philosophy into a real world solution we made every possible attempt to determine how a professional thief could circumvent our system. We determined that a starter interrupt would not suffice since a thief could simply hot wire the starter directly from the battery terminal or in the case of a manual transmission simply push the vehicle and "pop" the clutch while in gear. This led us to the conclusion that we needed to disable a critical device required for continuous engine operation. CarDefender was born.
