Robert D. Walter founded the company in 1971 as Cardinal Foods. Initially, the company was a food wholesaler. In 1971, the company acquired Bailey Drug Company, a drug distributor in Zanesville, Ohio, and came to be known as Cardinal Distribution, combining the distribution of its range of food and pharmaceutical products. The company became public in 1983 and was introduced on the NASDAQ stock exchange with a view to meet the financial needs of the expanding pharmaceutical distribution.
