Their monopoly in the sale of used second hand cars is supported by the fact that they perform all necessary inspections on the cars they offer in the market to be sold. They also provide cash back offers on there sales as well as warranty. During a year's span in 2005 the company sold 264, 958 cars which is a big milestone, generating $5.26 billion of revenues and a net income of $112.9 million. In 2007 the sales grew to 337, 021 cars within US. CarMax is a Fortune 500 company and is also applauded as America's Most Admired Company in Automotive Retailing. Placed over a vast area of about 59, 000 square feet an average CarMax outlet has an inventory of 300-400 vehicles with consistently increasing trends. According to studies made by surveyors the company is expecting to open 13 second hand car stores and 3 new car stores soon. The largest CarMax location is in Laurel, Maryland with approximately 1,000 cars in inventory. CarMaxís home office in Richmond, Virginia has received Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver Certification by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). The home office also contains a full court basketball gym, 2 racquet ball courts, baseball field and work out facilities.
History
Initially CarMax opened its superstore along with Circuit City under the then-CEO Richard L. Sharp in the year 1993 in Richmond and was also known as "Rick's Used Cars" but the concept clicked. CarMax marked its entry in 1997. CarMax grew rapidly and they officially parted from Circuit City in the year 2002. They also made joint ventures with companies like Mitsubishi, Toyota etc to open auto malls in Kenosha, though The sales of used cars was the major business and priority for CarMax. To start with CarMax worked on the basis of NO Transaction Fees policy but later scraped it as by then they had already made a mark in the industry and people didnít mind paying some extra cash for the quality provided by them.

The company says more than 20% of used vehicle sales are made initially through the Carmax.com website. The CarMax auto superstore offers a free Car Quote Services website consisting of their vehicle inventory in 22 states. They offer detailed vehicle reviews on new and used cars and trucks. You can search for vehicles available at the nearest CarMax dealer by entering a vehicle make, model and year. CarMax will also list alternative vehicles. You can search the inventory of the nearest CarMax location in your area; however, we could only find one vehicle available with our test search, the Pontiac Vibe.
Customer Relations
CarMax has always worked on making the customers feel a bit relaxed while shopping from them. They have been successful in developing such a trust in used cars that the customer can rely upon their products. Major features that have helped the company in building such a situation are No Haggle Pricing, i.e. CarMax buys a second hand car and converts it into a better shape to be sold again. They also evaluate a perfect price for the product and then no bargaining is done as on the new cars. This saves a lot of valued time for the customer as well as the staff. Secondly no extra negotiations are made even if the customer offers to sell his vehicle and also buy another one from them on the spot. They calculate a price for purchasing as well as selling old cars individually and by not keeping in view the trade-in options. CarMax provides a large variety of products from a number of brands at a single place. Also they keep their stores rich in quantity of inventory.
Charity Work
CarMax also takes full part in charities and also established CarMax Foundation in 2003 through which around $1.1 million was donated for various charitable causes. They offer donations, grants, service projects and even gifts to the needy. They also organize rallies and other events involving celebrities to collect huge sums of money for charity.
