The Case Western Reserve University is a private, coeducational research university located in Cleveland, Ohio. It was established in 1967 as a result of the merger between the Case Institute of Technology (chartered 1880 by philanthropist Leonard Case Jr., opened 1881) and Western Reserve Univ. (chartered and opened 1826 in the former area of the Connecticut Western Reserve).

The Case Western Reserve University has a liberal arts college, an institute of science and technology, a school of graduate studies and six professional schools: law, management, medicine, nursing, dentistry and social work. The university has often been recognized, nationally and internationally, for its strengths in education, research, service and experiential learning.

General Information

Located in Cleveland, Ohio, the Case Western Reserve University stands on 155 acres of urban land.

As of 2006, the private university had a total endowment of US$1.68 billion. Its total student population consists of 4,186 undergraduates and 5,766 postgraduates. The university has a full-time faculty of 2,400.

The university's current president (interim) is Gregory L. Eastwood, M.D., with Barbara M. Snyder as incoming president on July 1, 2007.

In athletics, the Case Western Reserve University has 19 Division III varsity teams. The school's mascot is Spartan.

Programs and Facilities

At present, the Case Western Reserve University has 10 schools, including the School of Law, Weatherhead School of Management, School of Medicine, Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursingm School of Dental Medicine, College of Arts and Sciences, Case School of Engineering, Mandel Center for Non-Profit Organizations, Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences and School of Graduate Studies

In addition, the Case Western Reserve University has an observatory and an electronics design center.

Reputation

  • In terms of its endowment, the Case Western Reserve University ranks as number 32 among all colleges and universities in the United States. It is also ranked number 18 in terms of largest endowment growth in the past 20 years, with an increase of 393% during that time.
  • In 2007, the annual US News and World Report ranked the Case Western Reserve University's undergraduate program as number one in Ohio and number 38 in the United States. Its medical school was also ranked number 21 in primary care and number 22 in research nationally. In addition, the report has consistently ranked the school's Biomedical Engineering department among the top five in both undergraduate and graduate biomedical engineering programs.
  • In 2006, the US News Rankings put the school's Weatherhead School of Management undergraduate program at number 29 and the Case School of Engineering undergraduate school at number 39. That same year, the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing graduate program was ranked at number five. Overall, the Case Western Reserve University was ranked number 23 among "Best Value" institutions, which the report defines as "colleges which offer a quality education for a low cost when taking into account scholarships and financial aid awards." In 2004, the same report ranked the Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences at number 11.
  • In 2007, the National Institutes of Health annual release of medical school rankings placed the Case School of Medicine and its affiliates at number 12 among the 122 medical schools in the United States.
  • In 2007, the National Science Foundation ranked the school's Research and Development Expenditures at number 34 among all colleges and universities in the United States. Moreover, the schools was also ranked number 32 for Federal Obligations to support Science and Engineering Growth and Development.
  • In 2007, The Advocate ranked the university among the top 100 LGBT-friendly universities and cited the improvement in its diversity standards over the last 10years and for opening its doors and welcoming more LGBT students and families.
  • In 2007, the university was ranked as number 18 for "most unhappy students" compared to a number 19 ranking the year before.
