An ancient Greek philosopher whose philosophy of Epicureanism was very popular in the Hellenistic period, and influenced leading modern philosophers such as Hobbes, Mill and Nietzsche.

While very few of his writings survive, the Hellenistic writer Diogenes Laertius collected three letters ascribed to him in his Lives of Eminent Philosophers.

In Epicurean thought, the purpose of philosophy is to attain happiness and tranquility, without fear or pain. Pleasure and pain are the measure of good and evil, and death is the end of both body and soul.
