Search Engine Marketing or SEM is specialized form of marketing on the internet focused on promoting companies and their websites through search engine visibility initiatives, including:
- Search Engine Optimization -- Advice and help on designing websites with an eye towards providing good search results (namely your company and website ranks high on search engines (like Google and Yahoo!). Such advice centers on how search algorithms work and what people search for. SEO help then provides suggestions in the site's coding, presentation, structure and unique content that is "search engine friendly," thus promoting your company by how it indexes on a variety of search engines. Specialization can also target specific search engines, image searches, local search and industry specific search engines.
- Pay Per Click advertising -- Pay Per Click advertising is a model used by many search enigines, where in advertisers only pay when users click on an ad. From an SEM standpoint, SEM firms help their clients identify the keywords and target markets in which their client's ads will appear, increasing their leverage and visibility in these markets and relevant searches.
- Paid Inclusion -- A process where search engine companies charge fees to include websites high in their search index (a notable exception to this is Google, which doesn't offer paid inclusion). Again, SEM firms can increase their client's visibility and marketing through this initiative and can help identify the proper search engines and keywords to optimize a client's advertising dollar and internet exposure.
