Paul Burger began caving in 1985 as a high school student involved in the Colorado Springs Parks and Recreation Department. Most of his early caving involved exploring and mapping caves in Colorado and New Mexico, most notably Lechuguilla Cave in Carlsbad Caverns National Park. His continued mapping and exploration in Lechuguilla Cave helped make it the one of the longest caves in the world at over 115 miles and the deepest limestone cave in the United States.
