Description
The Conductive Education Center of Metro Detroit (CECMD) - a non-profit organization - was incorporated in June 1999 by a group of Macomb County parents of children with cerebral palsy. They felt their children would benefit from Conductive Education. They refused to allow the medical insurance industry to dictate the amount of therapy their children would receive. The result was the CECMD, which has been providing Conductive Education, at no charge, to the children since September 1999. The gains seen are positively life changing. Currently, the organization provides financially for a facility, the conductor’s salary, assistant’s salary, insurance, equipment and various other expenses through the fund raising efforts of the core group of parents and board members. As of February 2004, CECMD is going strong. Our lead conductor has been with us for over three years providing the stability and consistency that Conductive Education programs require. Our goal is to continue to expand and provide services, at no cost, to many more children afflicted with Cerebral Palsy.
To pay for this expensive venture, we have sought funds from private donors, held fundraisers and have obtained a 501c3 corporate, non-profit designation. We have met our short-term goal by offering a year-round program and continue to actively fundraise in order to offer this program to more children in need. Our long-term goal is to benefit from state funding, as some of the other Conductive Education programs in the country have done.
Currently and in summary, the parents, along with a pediatric physiatrist, and other professionals are actively attempting to integrate this concept of learning into the State of Michigan School system.
