CSI was founded by Maya Wiley , a civil rights lawyer and advocate, and Jocelyn Sargent, a political scientist. Prior to founding CSI, both worked in various governmental and non-governmental organizations on issues of race and poverty for more than a decade. They met at the Open Society Institute, where they identified work and strategies to dismantle structural and institutional racism . In their examination of a variety of national, regional and local groups, they found that there were too few organizations engaging in specific pieces of work necessary to create structural reforms.
