About the Tango Society of Central Illinois
The Tango Society of Central Illinois, an affiliate of the Urbana Park District, is dedicated to the enjoyment of tango as a social dance. We host milongas (social dances) approximately monthly, and offer tango instruction through courses, workshops, and practicas. Most Tango Society activities are held at the Phillips Recreation Center, 505 W Stoughton, Urbana, IL.
Brief History
The Tango Society of Central Illinois was founded by Tom and Nancy Ronquillo in October 1996 in Bloomington-Normal, IL. During the early years of the developing tango community in central Illinois, Tom and Nancy were active in promoting tango through public performances, hosting milongas, and teaching classes in both Bloomington-Normal and Urbana-Champaign.
In November 1999, Ron Weigel and Joe Grohens initiated an affiliate agreement with the Urbana Park District to establish a branch of the Tango Society of Central Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. Since that time the Tango Society has been hosting monthly milongas at the Phillips Recreation Center and at the University of Illinois.
