Description edit

The Certified Organic Associations of BC (COABC) is the only government-approved body responsible for overseeing the BC Certified Organic Program. The COABC is designated to implement the program under the Food Choice and Quality Act.

When you see the checkmark symbol or the phrase “British Columbia Certified Organic” on any product, you can be certain that it has been grown and processed meeting strict BC government-approved standards for organic farm production and processing. Those standards were developed by the COABC, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries. For a summary of these standards, click here. To see the full standards in detail, click here.

Agencies accredited by the COABC inspect and certify organic farms and facilities in BC. There are eleven certifying bodies in BC right now. Why? Because BC is blessed with the most diverse landscapes in Canada. As a result, organic farming varies a great deal: from the Peace Region, with its expansive grain farms, to southern Vancouver Island, with its small-scale intensive vegetable farms. Organic certification has evolved to reflect those regional differences. To learn more about the individual certification bodies, click here.
