The Canadian Federation of Students and the Canadian Federation of Students-Services were formed in 1981 to provide students with an effective and united voice, provincially and nationally. At the time, it was recognized that for students to be truly effective in representing their collective interests to the federal and provincial governments, it was vital to unite under one banner.
Today, over one-half million students from more than 80 university and college students' unions across Canada belong to the Federations.
La Fédération canadienne des étudiantes et étudiants et la Fédération canadienne des étudiantes et étudiants-Services ont été fondées en 1981 pour donner aux étudiantes et étudiants une voix efficace et unifiée, tant aux niveaux provinciaux qu'à l'échelle pancanadienne. Il avait été convenu à cette époque qu'il fallait s'unir sous une seule bannière pour pouvoir représenter les intérêts collectifs de la population étudiante de façon véritablement efficace auprès des gouvernements provinciaux et fédéral.
Aujourd'hui, plus d'un demi-million d'étudiantes et étudiants dans plus de 80 universités et collèges au Canada sont membres des Fédérations.
