Chapin Hall
Description edit
Today's children will one day be entrusted with the nation's social, political, and economic institutions. They will be responsible for the vitality of their society. All who reach adulthood in the new century must be ready to play a significant role in shaping the world in which they and their families will live. Children are preparing for that role amid accelerating change and, for many, disheartening odds. At Chapin Hall, our work begins from the assumption that we cannot afford to write off a single child. This is more than an expression of sentiment and moral obligation. Nothing less than the future of our democracy is at stake.
When it comes to addressing the needs of children, we must know more about the state of our children. We must understand the nature, extent, and consequences of the challenges they face. And we must be informed about how our society—government, communities, private organizations, and families—is faring in addressing these challenges.
Building knowledge to serve children is the mission of the Chapin Hall Center for Children. Located at the University of Chicago, Chapin Hall is a research and development center that brings the highest standards of scholarship and the intellectual resources of one of the world’s great research universities to the real-world challenges of policymakers and service providers struggling to ensure that children grow, thrive, and take their place in a formidable world. Working behind the scenes with lawmakers and government administrators, as well as on the front lines with program providers, Chapin Hall puts rigorous, non-partisan research in the hands of those who shape the programs and policies that affect all children in their daily lives.
