About Us
Chater Allan was formed in 1995 from the merger of two long-established firms of Cambridge accountants. Chaters, formerly J Chater and Sons, was formed in 1870. For many years the firm had offices in Petty Cury, then in Bateman Street, before moving to Cherry Hinton Road in 1987. Hays Allan opened their Cambridge branch in 1919. The first offices were in Sidney Street. After the World War II the firm moved to Magdalene Street and then in 1979 to Sussex Street. The final move was to Newmarket Road in 1986. On the merger in 1995 the two firms moved to the premises at Newmarket Road.
Our longstanding roots in the academic and commercial city of Cambridge mean that we have a widely based portfolio of clients drawn from both sectors. Cambridge has become one of the most successful centres of technology in Europe and that has led to a tremendous growth in local business. The forward looking approach from the University in embracing the commercial world has ensured that many of Britain’s finest minds do not need to go abroad to prosper.
Bill trained as a chartered accountant with a small firm in Hampshire. On qualifying in 1968 he joined a London firm of accountants and then had a spell in commerce. He returned to the profession in 1977, joining Hays Allan in their Cambridge office. He was appointed a partner in 1978.
