Description

Chinese Hospital, a general acute care community-owned, not-for-profit organization, provides quality health care in a cost-effective way. It is responsive to the community's ethnic and cultural uniqueness and is accessible to all socioeconomic levels. Chinese Hospital is governed by a voluntary Board of Trustees, broadly representative of the community, and strives to assume a leadership role in all health matters.

Chinese Hospital is a unique healthcare provider with a long and rich history of providing access to culturally competent health care services for the Chinese Community. In 1900, the Tung Wah Dispensary opened in San Francisco's Chinatown. In 1923, Dispensary services had outgrown its space when fifteen community organizations (listed below) created the Chinese Hospital Association, a new non-profit public benefit corporation. The Board of Trustees raised funds for the construction of a new facility at 835 Jackson Street, which was opened in October 1925. In the mid-1970s, health care services had outgrown this facility when the Board of Trustees conducted extensive fund raising for the construction of a the new facility at 845 Jackson Street. Today the Hospital maintains a licensed bed capacity of 54 beds.

The Foundation's mission is to raise funds to acquire state-of-the-art equipment and facilities to maintain quality healthcare for the Chinese Community.
