The moment I was comfortable with taking my photography to a business level was soon after reading a quote from National Geographic Photographer Steve McCurry. Steve is the photographer best known for capturing the image of the anonymous Afghan refugee girl. When asked what it was he sought out when taking his memorable photographs, he replied: "The unguarded moment, the essential soul peeking out, the experience etched on a person's face..."
My own photographs are usually of the "non-portrait" style. In other words, I don't do a lot of "posed" photographs. When I look back on pictures of my own family, the most memorable ones are those that say "this is who I really am."
