Title

Austin Asian Film Festival

Description

Mission

CinemaAsia seeks to foster a deeper awareness and understanding of Asian cinema as art and culture. To achieve this, CinemaAsia has put together the Austin Asian Film Festival. What makes this film festival unique is that it is unapologetic about the films it shows, and about the seriousness of the issues that the films deal with. The Austin Asian Film Festival does not seek to sugar coat the many deep and important issues affecting Asia, but to offer a glimpse into this rich world through the eyes of some of the most exciting and thought provoking films about the region. Our hope is that having witnessed these films, audiences will leave with a better understanding of not only the problems affecting Asia, but the universal humanity.

History

CinemaAsia owes its existence to Professor Chiho Sawada, who taught a Korean Film and Literature course at the University of Texas at Austin in the fall semester of 2002. His introduction of Korean New Wave films inspired two students to create an organization that would bring such films to the Austin community. In doing so, the founders believed that the films would not only reflect the talents of the filmmakers, but also promote cultural awareness to viewers unfamiliar with Asia. The result was the CinemaAsia Austin Asian Film Festival in the spring of 2004.

The Austin Asian Film Festival is dedicated to cultivating an understanding and appreciation of the Asian and Asian-American experience. The festival is working under the fiscal sponsorship of the Asian American Community Partnership, a 501c non-profit organization affiliated with the Asian American Cultural Center.
