This site has been set up by a group of Stoke Newington people that know how lucky they were! We were extremely lucky to have, for a short time, a leisure centre that was built at such expense that it almost bankrupted the borough and continues to embarrass Sport England. This Leisure Centre was poorly designed, poorly built and its facilities poorly specified. Little or no effective project management seems to have been applied to the project and despite cost and time overruns in its construction it was closed, deemed unsafe, after 20 months of use.
In fact it embarassed us that as a result our colleagues, friends and neighbours across Hackney have seen nurseries close, street lights go unreplaced, their leisure facilities reduce in quality with King's Hall falling into disrepair, Haggerston Pool closed without notice and squatted while recommended for disposal for redevelopment, and Britannia continuing it's descent into the pot-holers paradise of darkness and a continually broken boiler. As for London Fields Lido; how much longer will they ignore local people's pleas for action?
