Welcome to Classic Refuse Trucks (CRT). The subject of this site is mechanical refuse collection equipment. Through photos and articles I hope to show how the state of the art evolved from the most basic self-loading wagons into the modern high-compaction truck of the 21st century. Mostly, I hope it is enjoyable to all, be you an enthusiast, industry professional or just a browser. As we approach a century of mechanized equipment, industry consolidation (in both manufacturing and collection) and safety standards have conspired to push classic designs out of the market, and off the streets. The modern refuse trucks of today are surely safer and much more efficient, but many of us still have memories of interesting vehicles of yesteryear, when fierce competition spawned dozens of novel designs. Though a few seemingly never go out of favor, a great number of the early pioneers have disappeared with the passage of time. Additionally,the size, complexity and condition of old refuse trucks often discourages restoration for museums*. At CRT, the memories of the classics will live on.
It is my intention and hope that this web site be interactive, serving as a place for historians and enthusiasts to swap information for the collective benefit of all. Submissions are highly encouraged, be they photos, articles or information about classic refuse trucks.
