History

The famous Coca-Cola was created by the American druggist John Pemberton in 1886 and designed for calming nervousness and stopping headaches. A less known fact is that Pemberton actually tried to create a pain reliever for himself and the other Confederated veterans (Pemberton fought for the Confederacy until early 1865) and that he designed the original formula of the future worldwide star of soft drinks in a humble kettle in his home in Atlanta. He then instructed his assistant to mix the brew with cold water in order to chill it but the latter accidentally put carbonated water in it. Coca Cola was born. After this strike of fate Pemberton begun selling the drink not only as an alternative for ginger ale and root beer (that were circulating on the 19th century cooling drinks market), but also as a remedy for morphine addiction (it was thought that the Coca leaves incorporated in the original formula were a cure for those addicted to opium and morphine).

The name of the drink, that became a veritable living legend, was designed by Frank Mason Robertson; it stands for the Coca leaves that then were an important part of the drink and for the Cola (Kola) nuts that it contained. Obviously the formula changed over time (the current formula still contains coca leaves depleted however by its active substances), but the name stuck.

Pemberton died in 1888, the same year when investor Asa Candler bought exclusive rights to the formula, thus incorporating it in the first Coca-Cola Corporation, in Atlanta, Georgia.

The promising but still obscure drink was soon (in 1894) rescued by Candler from the troubled corporation (whose associate owners, Charlie Pemberton, son of John Pemberton, Woolfolk Walker and himself, began fighting for rights on the name of the product and on the product itself) and started, without the former associates, a new corporation called The Coca-Cola Company.

From this point on, Coca Cola became an American cultural icon and remained at this stage to this day and as time passed by, new brands were added to the portfolio such as Fanta, Sprite and many Coca Cola variations.

Over the years, the brand took a life of its own becoming an integral part of the American culture. However, the spark that forced the evolution of one of the most efficient publicity machines in the history was due to competition. Pepsico, the owner of the Pepsi Cola brand were the first to mix popular culture with branding in the sixties by radically shifting the brand towards the values of the younger generation (the Pepsi Generation campaign), however it was Coca Cola that picked up the technique and perfected it and as far as things go, the company still uses it to this day. This was just the beginning though of what would be called “The Cola Wars”. In 1985, archrival Pepsi Cola launched a campaign which stated that in blind tests Pepsi tastes better. The response from Coca Cola was swift and soon they launched “New Coke”, with an altered formula. This plan backlashed very soon as pressure groups dedicated to preserving what was seen as tradition demanded the return of the old formula, which the company ultimately did. No one is sure to this day if this was a blunder or a publicity stunt, but after it, Coca Cola regained its lost market share.

The Company In Popular Culture

Coca Cola is the single most recognizable brand in the world. The advertising bombardment and the constant care to be in touch with the values of the younger generation are the causes for it. However this image is not flawless, as by entering new markets the values of the company often clashed with local values and local competitors. India is perhaps the best example, as the company was accused of unsafely high levels of pesticides and banned afterwards in certain regions, this decision was however later reversed. The distinct association between US and Coca Cola also had effects in Arab countries as some of them boycott to this day the company’s products.
