Title edit
Coe College
Description edit
The renovation of Coe's oldest building – Stuart Hall – has been bolstered with a $200,000 grant received from the Arthur Vining Davis Foundations. When completed for the start of fall classes, the project will create nearly 36,000 square feet of new and remodeled classroom space and faculty offices.
Stuart Hall, located at the corner of First Avenue and College Drive, was built as the college's Science Hall in 1909. Enrollment increases and higher student retention have caused Coe's enrollment to grow by nearly 25% over the past decade, stretching available classroom and faculty office space, and necessitating the project. The end result will be the doubling of academic space in Stuart Hall and a 25% increase in the area dedicated to instruction at Coe. It is the first significant addition of classroom space on campus since Peterson Hall was built in the 1960s.
While the exterior of the building will remain largely unchanged, the interior will be comparable to a brand-new facility once the renovations are finished, including new mechanical systems. The commitment to preserve one of Coe’s historic buildings is similar to the total renovation of the college's oldest residence – Voorhees Hall – completed in year 2000.
