Dr. Stephen Coleman is a leader in the field of laser vision correction. On June 14, 1996, he performed the very first FDA-approved laser procedure to correct nearsightedness in New Mexico. That patient, Beth Wagoner of Albuquerque, has 20/20 vision in each eye today.
Dr. Coleman received his medical degree in 1986 from Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C., and completed advanced specialized training in surgery of the eye at St. Vincent's Hospital and Medical Center in New York City, the primary teaching institution for New York Medical College. Dr. Coleman is among the handful of eye surgeons in the country selected to teach the FDA certification course to other doctors on the use of the VISX laser system. His most recent course was taught at the Scottsdale Eye Surgery Center in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Dr. Coleman performs personalized wavefront-guided CustomVue™ LASIK using a VISX STAR S4 excimer laser system with 3-dimensional eye tracking. Along with such prestigious institutions as Johns Hopkins, the University of Miami and Baylor University, Dr. Coleman has been part of an on-going FDA study evaluating wavefront technology since May of 2002 for nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. He was instrumental in gaining FDA approval for this technology in May of 2003.
