edit Comcast

Comcast is one of the world’s leading communications companies and the largest providers of cable services. They provide digital services, facilitate accelerated internet speeds, as well as clearer broadband services, and develop and deliver innovative programming.

edit History

Comcast was started in 1963 by Mr. Daniel Aaron, Ralph J. Roberts and Julian A. Brodsky. They started the company with a mere 1200 subscriber base of cable systems in Tupelo, MS. At that time the esteemed company was known by the name of American Cable Systems and it was only in 1969, about 6 years since its inception, that they changed the name to Comcast Corporation.

In 1997 Microsoft went ahead and invested approximately 1 billion USD in Comcast. In the very same year, Comcast acquired a 50.1 percent stake controlling interest in the E! Entertainment via their partnership with Disney. If it weren't for Bill Gates' injection of ~1 Billion USD into their business, they would still be competing with Time-Warner for rural areas; Thanks to Microsoft, however, there is now a triple-headed goat-like beast called AOL Time-Warner Comcast, because they have been absorbed into the monopolizing corporation that they have become today. I severely doubt there will be an anti-trust lawsuit against them, however, unless they try these tactics in the EU (Ask Microsoft). As recent as 2006, Comcast was listed as America’s top 50 corporations in the sphere of multicultural business opportunities. From its humble beginnings, Comcast has transformed itself into a "leader" in providing products and services catering to entertainment and communications. Today Comcast has over 24.2 million cable customers, 13.3 million digital cable customers, 12.1 million high-speed internet customers and approximately 3 million voice customers.

edit Products

Comcast has a wide variety of products to offer. They provide video services like the "best content on 'digital ' cable", video on demand, as well as high definition television. In terms of the Internet, Comcast provides fast, reliable speeds combined with the "best" content. Their IP-enabled digital voice service provides "high quality" in their phones along with interactive features, all at a very low price (when it works). Comcast has recently begun aiming at the small and medium sized businesses in providing them phone, internet and video services. Their interactive media focuses on operating their online businesses that provide entertainment, information and communication. These include Comcast.net, Ziddio, thePlatform and GameInvasion.net.

In addition to these, Comcast also offers a ‘triple play package’ known as Comcast triple play which combines cable services with high speed internet as well as Comcast digital voice. Comcast’s digital cable provides over 250 channels and an ever increasing compendium of on demand programs. Comcast’s on demand service provides an extensive library of a whopping 9300 programs every month. Out of these about 95 percent are available at no additional cost and also come with the ability to pause, rewind and fast forward. Comcast’s DVR enables recording all the favorite programs and shows. Their high definition (HD) television services promise better sound and life like image quality to dramatically enhance the viewing experience. Their high speed internet provides clearer broadband connections, greater speeds, along with added features such as Video Mail, The Fan broadband multimedia player as well as McAfee "security". Comcast’s digital voice is an exceptional home service that provides all the features of a typical phone service but it also has additional features offered at better prices, until your promotion runs out, then your bill skyrockets.

edit Comcast Cable Network

Comcast’s cable network spans a range of networks including Comcast sportsnet, Comcast sports southeast, sportsnet new york, mountainwest sports network, cn8, E! Entertainment, style network, G4 video game TV, the golf channel, among many others.

edit Interactive Media

Comcast’s interactive media spans channels like Ziddio and GameInvasion.

Comcast spectacor is a sports and entertainment company based out of Philadelphia. It owns the Philadelphia Flyers (NHL), Philadelphia 76ers (NBA), the Philadelphia Phantoms (AHL) etc. including the two centers they play in – Wachovia center and Wachovia spectrum. Comcast spectacor also happens to own Global Spectrum which is the largest growing firm in the field of assembly management.

The University of Maryland Terrapins have a nice basketball coliseum called the Comcast Center as well.

edit Comcast Spotlight

This is the advertising sales division of Comcast, which helps advertisers to further their business interests by placing advertisements with Comcast. Comcast spotlight has a global presence in almost 90 markets and with 30 million owned and represented subscribers. It’s large presence in television helps advertisers see their sales skyrocket once they’ve advertised with Comcast.

Their advertising solutions include video on demand, addressable advertising that deals with targeted advertising in niche segments, promotions, as well as through the Internet.

edit Press Room

Comcast provides the latest on their product launches in their press room section. This section also boasts of exclusive interviews with top channels like CNBC with their CEOs, various press releases pertaining to product launches, collaborations and acquisitions, the latest scoops on current partnerships, past revenue earnings as well as the way ahead, even many scholarship programs that Comcast has been involved in supporting and funding. They also have surveys incorporated in this section, that throw light on current consumer perceptions in the entertainment, communications and cable industry. These help to position Comcast in a favorable manner as a thought leader in this space.

Title

The title of a web page appears in search results as the link to that page. Learn more ...

Purpose

The title of a web page appears as a clickable link in search results and bookmarks. A descriptive, compelling home page title with relevant keywords can increase the number of people visiting the site.

Search Engines

Search engines view the text of the title tag as a strong indication of what the page is about. Accurate keywords in the title tag can help the page rank better in search results.

Length

A title tag should have fewer than 70 characters, including spaces. Major search engines won't display more than that.

Content

The title tag of your home page (and any other page on your site) should not contain the site’s domain name or URL. These will appear near the title in search results, so use your 70 characters to tell people what the page is about. The title tag should not contain any HTML, because it will be displayed incorrectly or not at all.

  • Good: This web page has a title tag.
  • Warning: The title tag for this page is too long. It should be 70 characters or less, including spaces.
The title of this site's home page:
Comcast Official Site: High-Speed Internet, Cable TV, and Phone Services Deals – XFINITY® from Comcast

Meta Description

Search engines often use the meta description of a web page to describe it in search results. Learn more ...

Purpose

The meta description tells searchers what a web page is about. It is often displayed below the title in search results, and helps people decide if they want to visit that website.

Length

Search engines will read 200 to 250 characters, but usually display only 150, including spaces. The first 150 characters of the meta description should contain the most important keywords for that web page. Using fewer than 50 characters could mean you’re not saying enough about the page.

Content

The meta description should be engaging, and should include keywords that accurately reflect what visitors will find on the web page. The keywords should be the same ones that a site's potential customers are using to search. Include a site’s location if it is important.

  • Warning: The meta description is longer than 150 characters. Search engines will probably display only the first 150 characters, including spaces.
The meta description for this site's home page:
Comcast gets you the best deals. Save on Comcast High-Speed Internet, Digital Cable TV, Comcast Digital Voice®, and Wireless Internet in your area. Get XFINITY® from Comcast and enjoy entertainment your way.

H1 Headings

The H1 heading is an important sentence or phrase on a web page that quickly and clearly tells people and search engines what they can expect to find there. Learn more ...

Just one H1

In most cases, a web page should have just one H1 heading. Using multiple H1 headings is okay if that is a logical way to organize the page, but they should be used sparingly. That’s because search engines can view multiple H1 headings as an attempt to signal that all the content on a page is equally important, a tactic that’s seen as an attempt to game the search engine algorithms.

Purpose

Search engines look for an H1 heading to determine what a page is about. Human visitors do, too.

Content and placement

The H1 heading appears on the web page itself, unlike the page title, which people will see mostly in search results.

The H1 tag (which contains the H1 heading) is usually listed first among the other heading tags for a page. None of the major search engines, however, will penalize a site for listing H2 through H6 tags ahead of the H1 tag.

The H1 heading for a page should be different from its title. Each can target different important keywords for better SEO.

  • Warning: This page has more than one H1 heading. It should have just one.

  • XFINITY TV
  • XFINITY Internet
  • XFINITY Voice

Robots

Your website's robots.txt file can tell search engines to ignore parts of your site. Learn more ...

Purpose

Website owners usually use robots.txt to let search engines know which pages or sections of their site shouldn't be indexed — for example, web contact forms, print versions of web pages and other content that's duplicated elsewhere on the site. Robots.txt can also be used to request that specific robots not index a site. For more information, read How To Use Robots.txt.

Be careful!

If you're going to use robots.txt, be careful not to accidentally exclude search engines from pages you want people to find. To learn more, read Don't Block Search Engine Crawlers.

Search engine robots

You'll need to know the names of specific search engine robots - or "bots" – if you’re going to exclude any or all of them from any part of your site.

  • Google’s bot is called Googlebot. Google is the world’s largest search engine, and is where many people discover new websites.
  • Bing’s bot is called msnbot. Bing also provides search results to people using Yahoo to search the Web. Together, Bing and Yahoo are the second largest search resource, after Google.
  • Baidu’s bot is called Baiduspider. Baidu is a major search engine in China, and the number of people using it is increasing rapidly.
  • AboutUs.org’s bot is called AboutUsBot. To create a Site Report, AboutUs uses crawling technology that’s similar to what search engines use.
  • Good: This website’s robots.txt file is not blocking major search engines from crawling its pages. Your website can appear in any engine’s search results.

Canonical Url

This website can live at www.Comcast.com or Comcast.com. It's best for your site's visibility to live at just one URL, or web address. You'll want to create a 301 redirect to the URL you choose from the other URL. Learn more ...

Choose one or the other

Whichever of these URLs you choose, make sure your website lives ONLY at that location, which is called the canonical URL for your site.

Be careful!

If you choose www.MyWebsite.com for your site, make sure people who don't type www can get to your site, too. Create a permanent 301 redirect from MyWebsite.com to www.MyWebsite.com.

If the same web page exists at two different URLs, people can choose to link to one or the other. Links from other sites to your website are valuable — they tell search engines that your site is important to people. By splitting valuable links between two identical pages, you're diluting the power of those links to help a page rank higher in search results.

  • Warning: Your website resides at www.Comcast.com, and Comcast.com is temporarily redirected to it. You should permanently redirect it instead, using a 301 redirect.
