Businesses have been saving money with VOIP phone service for awhile, but now it's the new way to make and receive phone calls for home users. It involves the transmission of telephone calls over a data network via the Internet. In other words, VOIP can send voice, fax and other information over the Internet, rather than through the (PSTN) or regular telephone network. In order for VOIP to work, a customer has to have a broadband or "fast access" internet connection in their home or small office. A broadband or "fast access" internet connection could consist of a cable modem, or high speed services such as DSL or a local area network. As a general rule, internet connection speeds of 90K or better are considered a broadband connection.
