Seth was born in 1958 in Dillon, South Carolina. He graduated from Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts with a combined major in Chemistry and Politics. He worked as an environmental chemist for two years prior to going to law school at Duke University.
After graduating law school, Seth was a law clerk to Judge Hugh A. Wells of the North Carolina Court of Appeals for a year. He then came to Charlotte to work as an Assistant Public Defender, where he tried over a hundred criminal cases to a verdict. After three years there, he chose to go into private practice with the law firm of Parker, Pollard and Brown, where he learned how to prosecute workers' compensation and personal injury claims.
