How pathetic, all these "concerns" about copyright

For some reason these concerns about infringed copyright sound very exaggerated and made-up to me. What the hell is wrong with you? Sure, the bot does not have to copy whole pages, but for the five domains listed for me it did not do that (maybe because I properly included the meta tags for search engines in my HTML header?)! If you do not want your page to be crawled, you can simply modify your robots.txt and ask Ray to fix this or that, i.e. remove history entries (which I did and which worked). In my case the capitalization of the domain was done so that it would create associations no one likes with their website. Furthermore the contact address from the WHOIS record was published.

Also, no one here would probably argue if their content got "cached" by Google - which, by the way does this much more refined and could therefore be infringing copyrights, too - or another popular search engine. Most people would not argue about their site being featured in one of the big web directories, edited or not. This wiki basically is an edited web directory and it even lets you edit your site's entry. This is rare for edited directories as mostly some editor will do this and you will not have any influence on what's going to be written there ...

So really, calm down. If you don't want your content to be crawled, set up your robots.txt accordingly and your websites will die a slow death because no one ever visits them because they cannot be found! Since you seem to want to be safeguarded against unknown robots, you would have to exclude all robots, except those you know. Could turn out to be a big mistake, but it is by far easier to complain as is done above.

In fact there could be some meta-elements which should be parsed by the bot to decide whether the website can be added to the directory, however, I know this only for adult sites which have certain meta tags to allow filter software to remove them in favor for child protection. However, I do not know any meta tags which describe the license under which the content is being published. This would be a chance to cater everyone, even those not willing to have their websites listed here. --Oliver | talk 02:27, 1 September 2006 (PDT)

Followup: What I want to say by the above is, that copyright is given, but citations shouldn't be an issue, whether being listed in the Google cache or the website excerpt in the Google search results or here in this wiki.

There is, however, one real concern I have ...

Don't include contact address!

In fact the WHOIS information is not meant to be published anywhere outside the context of the WHOIS record, so here you could definitely be in violation of internet regulations. This record was established to allow some trademark owner or someone else who has some concerns with a domain/domain name to contact the domain owner via snail mail or electronically. It was never meant to be gathered somewhere and in fact this is something that makes this wiki look bad. It makes it look like a spammer's engine, since spammers were (or still are?) known to harvest email addresses through the WHOIS information.

It is already questionable that my registrar publishes my information. However, a third party such as this wiki should not be allowed to do this in any case. In fact the WHOIS information is not important anymore, since the administrative contact has to be ensured via well-defined email aliases for each and every domain on the web.

This is a matter of privacy and there is no reason to refer to the WHOIS searches, since you will have to actively search for the WHOIS record on these sites. Also most of these sites, including the registrars themselves, explicitly warn anyone to use this outside of the WHOIS context.

To add something. I queried the policy of one WHOIS server, just as a showcase:

DeepThought:~# whois -h whois.psi-usa.info POLICY

The data in the WHOIS database of PSI-USA, Inc. is provided by
PSI-USA, Inc. for information purposes, and to assist persons in
obtaining information about or related to a domain name registration
record. PSI-USA, Inc. does not guaantee its accuracy. By submitting
a WHOIS query, you agree that you will use this data only for lawful
purposes and that, under no circumstances, you will use this data to

Similar policies exist and under many legislations - your wiki is available world-wide! - you will be in conflict with privacy laws when publishing the contact addresses, yes even the email address. In case of the description meta-tag the website owner has basically agreed to give you that information, in case of the WHOIS record there is no other way than give it to your registrar (anonymous services have other issues), but that does not mean that you are allowed to publish it somewhere else out of context! --Oliver | talk 02:34, 1 September 2006 (PDT)

New question

I see how to edit existing pages, but how does one go about changing the capitalization of existing domain names? (I.e., FirstNePhi.com should be Firstnephi.com, and WitzLaw.com should be Witzlaw.com). It looked like I could change anything BUT that. Thanks much, Sandy Rabinowitz (owner of witzlaw.com and firstnephi.com), 15-Dec-2006.

There are two ways, one described in FixName and the other: You have to create an account first. Once logged in, you will see a move tab next to the edit and history tabs at the top of the page. You can use that to rename the page. Depending on the settings here, you may have to wait a few days after creating the account before you can move pages. -anon 15:39, 28 December 2006 (PST)

Can you reinstate eBay.co.uk, please?. Today both my computers get ebay.com from your home page with everything in USD.

You will need to contact that server directly, AboutUs would be good to discuss what happened. Best, MarkDilley

Lock Pages ?

Why isnt there a way to "LOCK" pages by the company/domain owner?

This could easily turn into a way to defame a company by a competitor. Some of us stay busy and/or may be away from a computer for extended periods of time and unable to be notified of changes. If we dont know changes were made how are we supposed to fix it? Yes, we could fix it when we are made aware but by then the damage could allready be done. This is a cool unique way of getting advertiseing but it has too many possibilities for abuse by being a wiki.

There is a community and staff that patrol RecentChanges for malicious content on a regular basis. We are looking into a domain holder contributed section though.

Violating my Creative Commons License

"Yes, we are a for profit company, but we are not a fly by night scam. We strongly believe that AboutUs will be a healthy part of the new web culture. It is a place for people to research topics of personal and professional interest, to know what others think about a given website and to simply wander the links and discover new areas of the web they are not familiar with. We warmly welcome those who wish to join us in creating such a site."

This is an issue that we are looking into. MarkDilley

Cackleberries.com

Someone continuously changed our information which I understand they can do but now there is a message that says we don't want any information up there. Did you put that there?

FreeDonation.com appears to be a scam.

As a private citizen, I've been investigating FreeDonation.com, which is promoted on your website. None of the causes that it purports to support have said that they are currently receiving anything through this web-site, and the founders have been unresponsive to my queries. Do you have current info about this site. I'd really appreciate your feedback.

Thanks,

Rochelle L.

Hello Rochelle, we don't have information on the site, just what is here. If you would like to talk about how to use AboutUs as a resource for your work, please contact me. MarkDilley

Changing a page's name

Hi there! We just started a website http://luckyhonu.com and someone entered the page here as LuckyHoNu.com making it look like Ho Nu were 2 separate words. The site is named after the hawaiian turtle "honu." Is there anyway to change the site location so that it doesn't capitalize that N? Thanks for your time!

-Margaret

Hi Margaret, it is easy to FixName - either place the tag on the page or log in and move the page yourself ;-) - oh heck I might just do it now. Best, MarkDilley

MarkDilley, THANKYOU! *wiki hug!* -Margaret

:-) - thanks!

It should be WolfsParadiseIrc.com.

Thank you,

Hi Todd, we are an open edit wiki and while we will blank a page of it's history at a domain holder's request, we won't prevent users from adding information to our site. Let me know if you have any more thoughts or questions. Best, MarkDilley

Mark, the issue here is that none of us put this information up in the first place. You did! There are many opportunities out there to promote our websites, but they are pro-active and nor re-active. You are making huge assumptions about how we want our websites promoted. You really have missed the point of a Wiki here!

Not sure what you mean about missing the point of a wiki. Anyone, on their own blog, can write a review of your website, yes? Do you agree with that? You could ask them to take it down, but would you really excect them to do so? AboutUs is like that, except much more open. You're free to contribute to the article about your domain as well. You can actually talk with those writing the review. We believe this is a very powerful model for community-created content. TedErnst
