Description

The physical building which houses the Country Emporium ltd. has been a center of trade and a marketplace since 1892 when it was opened by E.L. Guild, the second oldest pharmacist in New York State. The building housed a full spectrum of businesses including a bakery,a variety store, medical and attorney offices, and the Reporter Newspaper and Printers.

The four story brick Georgian has long dominated Delaware Street in Walton, becoming the focal point of incoming traffic after the new vehicle bridge spanning the West Branch of the Delaware River was completed. Studying old village photos, one notices the predominance of the building among its less stately neighbors, few of which now remain on the street.

When the walls in the old section were being refurbished the carpenters discovered accordian lathe beneath the plaster. The decision was made to leave a section of this unusual construction showing. Accordian lathe was used between 1750 and 1850. One piece of wood was split and stretched. This can be seen today as a framed section of this lathe is displayed beneath plexiglass. Another interesting bit of history being preserved in the building is an old door on which Reporter Company employees recorded their names and the date they joined the company.
