The Center for Responsible Nanotechnology is a non-profit research and advocacy organization concerned with the major societal and environmental implications of advanced nanotechnology. We engage individuals and groups to better understand the implications of molecular manufacturing and to focus on the real risks and benefits of the technology. Our goal is the creation and implementation of wise, comprehensive, and balanced plans for responsible worldwide use of this transformative technology.

The Center for Responsible Nanotechnology got started in December 2002 as a result of email conversations about nanotechnology between Mike Treder and Chris Phoenix. Mike, who had extensive experience with non-profit organizations, realized that molecular manufacturing was coming sooner than most people expected, and the consequences could be very bad if the world was caught unprepared; Chris, who had studied this technology for over a decade, realized that it was time to act on his understanding of the situation. The conversation rapidly gained energy, and we knew almost immediately that we should collaborate on something. Before the end of the month, we had a name, a website, a vision, and several goals. We had also gained experience working together intensively; we had already produced our first paper, and had agreed on many of the principles described here.

We are proud of everything we have accomplished so far, but also mindful that greater challenges await us in the years to come. This is important work that few others are doing.
