Crikey.com.au is the brainchild of former Liberal Party of Australia staffer Stephen Mayne. Rapidly growing to become one of the leading "underground" political news sources in the country, it was recently sold to Private Media Partners, headed by Eric Beecher and Diana Gribble. It consists of limited publically available news content on the website, along with extended news content and a daily newsletter for paying subscribers.
It remains -- along with recent start-up Manic Times -- one of the few relatively prominent news sources in Australia not under large-scale corporate ownership.
