Who We Are
The Community Service Society (CSS) is a leading, independent, nonprofit organization that provides innovative solutions to the most urgent problems facing low-income New Yorkers. For more than 160 years, we have worked to strengthen community life by conducting research, policy analysis, advocacy, and service initiatives.
Our Mission
The mission of the Community Service Society is to identify problems which create a permanent poverty class in New York City, and to advocate the systemic changes required to eliminate such problems. CSS will focus on enabling, empowering and promoting opportunities for poor families and individuals to develop their full potential, to contribute to society, and to realize social, economic and political opportunities.
Why We Are Effective
CSS caseworkers address the immediate needs of New Yorkers in need while our policy and advocacy staff work on bringing about broader social change through research, policy analysis, and advocacy. From Government agencies to elected officials; from grass roots advocacy groups to major media outlets, CSS works to raise awareness about, and provide solutions to the problems facing low-income New Yorkers.
