The mission of the Journalism Alumni Association is to support the CSUN Department of Journalism in every way possible and to bring together, with pride and professionalism, all alumni, graduates, faculty and students.
Although it didn't last long initially, the Cal State Northridge Journalism Alumni Association was created by 12 graduates on Nov. 20, 1976, "in what might be considered a Caesarean section of parliamentary procedure," according to a 1977 Journalism Department newsletter (at right). Its interim officers were Joe Shinn (Class of '74, president), Ed Davis ('76, vice president) and Ron Villafana ('74, secretary/treasurer). Shinn recalls meeting a few times but memories and records of the JAA's first incarnation are scarce.
As part of a celebration saluting the department's 25th anniversary in 1983, the organization was resurrected as the "new" Journalism Alumni Association (at left). Its founding board members were Pat Messigian ('73, president), Jim Yeager ('74, vice president), Bob Rawitch ('67, secretary) and Ross Goldberg ('75, treasurer).
