About CVNC: Growing Pains
Raleigh, October 28: CVNC is, as noted on our home page, an online performing arts journal based in central North Carolina. We exist to serve those who share our belief that the performing arts are an integral part of life and cannot thrive unless the community knows what is available and what effect the performances have on audiences. In recent years the sources for such information have been dwindling — just when the offerings and their quality have risen significantly! Our model was San Francisco Classical Voice, the first large-scale non-profit platform of this kind in America, and we remain indebted to Robert Commanday and the SFCV staff for the help they provided as we charted our course. Sites like ours provide viable alternatives to decreased coverage in the commercial media.
How do we exist? We don't offer subscriptions, we have no dues or fees, and – till this fall – we've accepted no advertising. We are supported primarily by grants and tax-deductible donations, and we are profoundly grateful to all who have joined with us in this effort. We invite your support.
Our journal has grown considerably since July 2001 – and we're still here, providing services to the performing arts community. We've engaged dance and theatre critics and added music critics beyond the Triangle. We now strive to provide comprehensive coverage of classical music, opera, and dance throughout our state and of theatrical events in the Triangle region. Reviews are our primary offerings, supplemented by what we believe are the most comprehensive performing arts calendars available anywhere in NC. Our calendars are based in large measure on our series tabs, which contain information provided by cooperating presenters – presenters we rely on to keep us up-to-date and to grant our critics access to their performances so we can review them. We currently fund 30 reviews per month and often publish additional copy that is donated to CVNC by our dedicated writers. The reviews themselves are not for sale, but we urge presenters to consider the value of the marketing support represented by our series tabs and our detailed calendars, wherein the entries run at least 30 days in advance. Our readership has grown steadily as we have expanded our offerings – across the past year, we have averaged 27,572 site visitors per month (or, if you prefer, 419,656 hits/month). It may be worth noting that these stats reflect the interest of dedicated, devoted arts enthusiasts and patrons. In light of all this, we invite presenters who have not yet utilized our services to provide listings, work with us, and purchase ads to help sustain this 501(c)(3) platform.
