- Founded in 2002, HAL is an outgrowth of the 10-year old Freethinkers of Colorado Springs (FTCS), a widely known, uniquely successful free thought social and educational organization. Shortly after the turn of the century, the veteran leaders of FTCS sensed that it was time to move on to a more pro-active humanist outreach in Colorado Springs. FTCS membership, though solid, did not seem to reflect what was happening to a changing urban community.
