Title

Sailmakers - Dabbler Sails - Sail Lofts - Sails for small boats - Sail Makers

Description

The Muskrat is a highly modified Marshall 22 catboat. She daysails, races and cruises on the Chesapeake Bay. Besides making the boat handier, safer, and faster, the new rig allows additional sails, which of course is what the sailmaker wants!

The sketch shows the original concept. We sailed her with a Bermudan mizzen for a few years, then made the bigger high-peaked lugs'l shown. The half-wishbone sprit boom makes it self tending and self vanging. We recently abandoned the self-tending furling jib for the lapping sail originally intended, and added winches. We now have something to do besides turn the wheel when tacking. The sails are Bainbridge 5.5 oz Classic Cream.

An earlier converted catboat, the 18' Dabbler, was also rigged as a gaff yawl. Between the two boats, we made a dozen sails, modifying and refining along the way. Good practice.
