- Ballet Afsaneh Art and Culture Society is a professional nonprofit 501(c)3 performing arts company based in the San Franciso Bay Area of California.This dynamic group presents performances and activities featuring dance, poetry, and music of the Silk Road —the historic trade route that stretched 7,000 miles across Central Asia from the China Sea in the east to the Mediterranean in the west. In addition to traditional presentations, the repertoire includes original contemporary work grounded in these classical idioms. Transcendent music and interwoven poetry accompany the stately court dances and dazzling dervish spins of this renowned ensemble. The name Afsaneh is actually a Persian (Farsi) word which translates as fairytale, legend, a mythical enchantment. Repertoire for concert performances exhibits a wide range, from glittering lyrical fairytale to incisive, thought provoking contemporary work. The regions represented by the Ballet Afsaneh repertoire include; Iran, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Armenia, Turkey, Chinese Turkistan, Azerbaijan, Kurdistan, and North India. In our rapidly changing world the need for cultural understanding and preservation has never been greater; Ballet Afsaneh brings to life the history, poetry and spiritual images of these enduring cultures.
