Hi DaughertyBw, Welcome to AboutUs! Just came across your work on StackZilla.com. You are doing a wonderful job! If you need any further information/assistance, please have a look at the help page or drop me a line. Have a great day. Obed Suhail

Hello, I just wanted to stop in and say that it's great to see you joining the community effort to flag pages that are PossibleAdultContent in accordance with our AdultContentPolicy. Thanks so much, and out of curiosity I wonder where you heard or learned about this functionality (the post on the homepage or noticing the red flag)...? KristinaWeis 22:57, 14 August 2007 (PDT)

Hey, yeah it's great to see you here. Wiki and I are becoming great friends... I love it. I noticed a couple articles you did on Pakistan and I thought you might be interested to know that our satellite office is actually in Lahore (see Category:AboutUsStaffLahore and Lahore). And a question, if you don't mind - we just started the whole "flag" thing, and we are trying to decide if changing it so the flag would initially be green and then red if/once a page was flagged as PossibleAdultContent. What do you think - would this make more or less sense? KristinaWeis 23:17, 14 August 2007 (PDT)

DaughertyBW, looks like you're working hard on the wiki page about your site here at AboutUs. And you're reaching out to people like me, with a somewhat personalize invitation. I'm sure that's a good idea as well. One thought is that the personalized part needs to be more personalized. In my case, you pointed out WiserEarth.org, whereas I really have nothing to do with that site, and haven't been active there. I do have a link to my profile there, but that's it. Wiser might be a good place for you to meet people, but on the other hand, I'm sure AboutUs is also a good place for that. I'd just recommend making friends with people, and using more of a soft sell. Just a thought. One question, what do you hope your site will accomplish? peace, TedErnst

One other suggestion! When you're inviting folks, link to stackzilla.com. Show off what you've done here on the wiki! TedErnst
My messages weren't meant to be critical. Sorry about that. I just know what it's like to feel passionately about my own work/cause and have a hard time finding others that way to get involved. And while I may never get passionate about your website, I want to get to know you, and through that, we may find ways I will get involved in your website, or where I can link you to someone that would be perfect for it. And you may link someone to the NetworkWeaversNetwork or one of my passions. I'm really glad you're here and I'm glad that you're reaching out! TedErnst

Hi, Bryan nice to hear from you! I'll definitely read the articles you mentioned. Have a nice day! Best, Obed Suhail

Hi Bryan! Thanks for the kind words! I got caught up in the wiki world quite by accident and now I find I completely love it! I never thought I'd end up being an anti-pedophile and anti-child exploitation advocate, but what I stumbled upon by accident has made me realize the importance of proactive steps in a lonely world. Hope to see more of you! Misha

edit Hello!

I just noticed your note on User talk:Agedbutt. That's great! Let me know if you would like to start WelcomingPeople at all (it's one of my favorite things to do to help out on the site). And about the new Google maps feature: there is probably a help page of sorts regarding this... somewhere, and if not there should and will be soon! I will hopefully remember to bring it up on Monday when we're all back in the (brand new!) office... or if you'd like you could jump in the AboutUs Web IRC (chat) on Monday (11-4 PST to be safe) and you can talk to just about everyone. Cheers! KristinaWeis 23:07, 18 August 2007 (PDT)

Haha! I just noticed another edit of yours to discover that you're already WelcomingPeople and that is GREAT!!! I don't know if you have spoken with anyone about this, but we like to keep track of who we welcome via the WelcomingPeople page - at the top you will see some thoughts that past and present "welcomers" have compiled about welcoming and below we keep track of who we welcome by day (our idealistic goal is to welcome everyone user who makes an edit and we try to keep track of this so we can see how we're doing). If you would like to see my basic welcome message it resides at User:KristinaWeis/Welcome3. Yay! KristinaWeis 23:16, 18 August 2007 (PDT)

edit MESE

Could you save the page with the code that's not working so I can see what you've got and if I can help? Ted Ernst | talk

All for the want of a colon. If you put [[Category:Foo]] on your page (anywhere), that will put your page into category:foo, but will not appear on teh page. To link to the category:foo page, you have to type [[:Category:Foo]]. Ted Ernst | talk
Category:NetworkWeaver:MESE - Mending the Elmira Syndrome Endeavor is looking pretty good. Is Saif your alter-ego? Vacation was great (aside from my iPod getting lost/stolen), but it's nice to be back as well. The new office is stupendous! KristinaWeis 16:39, 21 August 2007 (PDT)

Hey Bryan, quick question. Is there reason Mending the Elmira Syndrome Endeavor is in the category namespace? Would it make sense to move it to Mending the Elmira Syndrome Endeavor? Also, have you met User:David Braden? I think you two would have a lot to talk about. peace, Ted Ernst | talk

Yes, unfortunately copy/paste is the only way to go because the Category namespace doesn't allow "move." In future, you won't have to copy/paste to change the name, just use "move." Ted Ernst | talk

edit Similar Projects

Bryan, As Ted said - I took a quick look at your work and think that we can collaborate - take a look at mine and let me know where and when we can talk. David Braden

I had a chance to read through MESE. I have some thoughts on that. I have been working on community economic health as a function of complexity spirals. I am also interested in connections across interest and expertise within a locality as a necessary first step to implementing sustainable systems of production. See Local Organizing and the Planetary Mind. One specific project that might be applicable to Elmira is Denver CIE.
For reasons we can discuss, I would like to be active on Wiserearth. Therefore, I have set up a discussion there. If you would prefer a different forum, I would not be offended (they do not allow live links in discussion posts but I am after them to fix that). I will also be introducing you to Steve Habib Rose with whom I am working on "Social Networking Analysis" for the purpose of understanding how to build intentional networks within a locality in order to implement sustainable systems of production. Looking forward to your thoughts, David Braden

Bryan, I administrate an "off-topic" community which grew out of a much larger site's community, several private communities, and I'm also site administrator for several sites involving Tibetan Buddhist monks (even though I'm neither Tibetan or Buddhist) and a rowing club. It's all non-profit work for non-profit organizations.

edit Feature Me Potentials page

Hi Brian,

Thanks for the note. Yes, you did the nomination correctly. Editing the FeatureMePotentials page would actually subvert the system and make it so we would likely not notice the nomination. We're trying to get caught up on processing the little backlog of nomination this week, but I've been watching the pages you've nominated.

I'll have notes posted on the FeatureMePotentials in a little bit.

edit Awesome!

Great to see you welcoming new users. Just wanted to let you know that your style is really engaging and helpful. Best, Asad

A small thing I'd like to point out - we usually welcome users on their talk pages instead of user pages, although there is no hard and fast rule. The only advantage being that they get notified whenever somebody changes their talk page. On the welcoming page too we provide the link to their talk page. Have a great day. Asad
Oh that's great! I did notice that one of your links was red so I fixed NeedHelp? to link to Help instead. (The link in the left navigation says Need Help? but the actual page is titled differently. That's awesome - keep up the good work! KristinaWeis 14:34, 2 September 2007 (PDT)
Oh, one thing. On the WelcomingPeople page we usually log a link to the user's talk page so it isn't a red link and so someone could easily click to see what the message said (I tweaked 'em already). I like your welcome messages though, very cool. VERY cool :) KristinaWeis 17:12, 2 September 2007 (PDT)
No, don't get me wrong - I think your welcome messages are GREAT. What I was meaning is that on the WelcomingPeople page we usually log User talk:Whoever instead of User:Whoever because 1. if they don't have a PersonalPage the user link will show up red and 2. it's easier to check out how other people are welcoming if it links straight to the talk page, but this is in no way a big deal, just the norm. Yeah, so essentially you rock at WelcomingPeople and I'm glad you like it, cause I think it's certainly great what you're doing. Have a great Labor Day too, cheers! I wasn't sure how to do this myself so in learning how I essentially ended up doing it. I think I did it right, but TakKendrick will let me know/fix anything I may have messed up. I just went off the example of another page and everything seems to link right, so it should be good. Best of luck! KristinaWeis 20:11, 2 September 2007 (PDT)

edit Portal:Writing_Lab

Hi Bryan! Thanks for your message. I don't know that my name means mother of the faithful, but it's certainly in honour of the Prophet's daughter, who was given that title.

It would be great to have you on the Writing Lab team. I've just looked at your website, and you've got some fascinating stuff up. Take a look at our project page for this week if you'd like to jump in there. Alternatively, if you'd like to tweak the existing stuff or work on a new section (perhaps on journalistic writing?) then that would be great as well. Saliha and I would love to have you on board! Let me know if there's any way I can help. FatimaRaja 20:25, 2 September 2007 (PDT)

At present, Saliha and I were planning to feature a research paper every fortnight for discussion. Maybe yours could be next in line? About new sections: we've got an academic focus right now, but are open to ideas. From your experience and interests, some quick thoughts are: (a) if you're interested, we'd love to have someone take charge of scientific or business writing. Neither of us has any experience in that. (b) how to develop and write a business plan, with a sample plan or two (c) ditto for writing comment and editorial articles. (c) We could also start by putting up a sample business plan, and point out some of its important features, as has been done for the Hamlet article on the portal. What do you think? FatimaRaja 21:32, 2 September 2007 (PDT)

That was fast! I'll look over the articles and get back to you. FatimaRaja 22:34, 2 September 2007 (PDT)

edit Brilliant!

Hi Bryan! Firstly, thank you for your invitation. It really means a lot when active members are selflessly willing to contribute to the AboutUs community. Makes our own efforts seem so small! :) Now then, regarding the Evolution of Thought Institute, I simply love the idea and would be more than happy to contribute to it. As you can probably tell, I'm relatively new to AboutUs but would like to believe that I am very politically active. I will also be pursuing a graduate degree in Public Policy next year. Now the thing is, I have my own project going on that is surprisingly similar to yours. It's called The Social Policy Experiment and while it may still be incomplete and not catering to as many people, it borrows from the same idea. The key difference that I see is that The Social Policy Experiment uses the Consensus Polls portal to allow the community to draft that single, unanimous policy. Do have a look at it (this is the link to the initial plan) and let me know if there's any way I can change it, improve it, etc. And while I have several projects going on at the moment, I'll be contributing to the "institute" every now and then and will hopefully be seeing more of you! :)

Take care, Umair Tamim

edit More on Portal:Writing Lab

Yes, I think directing new users to portals and categories is a great idea. And it would certainly help them find things they are interested in, and to settle down in the AboutUs community.

I've been thinking it over, and it seems to me that perhaps we should plan out the journalistic writing and/or business plan sections before getting them up. Reason being, Saliha and I had originally planned this to be an academic writing forum, and while we're both very open to expanding it, we don't have the know-how to proceed without having concrete ideas in place. So let's talk it over! The simplest way seems to me to be with the business plans, which are structured and can be evaluated for their strengths on tighter criteria than journalistic writing. Saliha should be back tomorrow or the day after, and will have ideas too, I'm sure.

Of your articles, I'd like to feature 'Aggravated Assault', especially, on the site. It has such a clear, well laid out structure. I'm linking to it from the Portal, but would like to ask you to put in a few things when you can:

  • References of course
  • How about a short note that gives the following information, so that readers can look at it more clearly:
    • Which class this was written for and what the assigned topic was. If there was no class or topic, then maybe just a line about what you assigned yourself to write
    • Why you structured the paper in this way. Indeed, I was wondering, were the subheadings in the original paper? If not, they're a good way to show how you've organised your thoughts.
  • And of course, I look forward to seeing the pictures and graphs once you put them in.
  • All this also goes for the Drinking Water article, but I'd like to wait before putting that one up, so we can have a steady stream of articles over the next week or two!

Let me know what you think. FatimaRaja 03:46, 3 September 2007 (PDT)

Hi Bryan. I've not had a chance to look at the articles just yet, but I will soon and get back to you. It's tricky working in two different time zones! Hope you had a good holiday. FatimaRaja 21:19, 3 September 2007 (PDT)

Hi Bryan. A couple of hours later, and I've had a chance to look at your work on Aggravated_Assault. You'll see I've tweaked the write-up slightly, to make it clearer and to tackle the tricky question of simultaneous submissions. I do see a lot of potential for this idea when one is developing ideas for a thesis over the course of an academic career, though, and when I move on to that part of the portal, I'll link from there as well. edit re: WelcomingPeople

Hi Bryan, this is great that you're working on the WelcomingPeople process! I haven't focused on this area very much yet. It looks like you've already left some thoughts on that page directly (WelcomingPeople), and I'd recommend you go ahead and add your idea from my talk page there as well. Also, the staff are just changing the way we organize OurWork and have created this task: WelcomeAllRegisteredContributers between Sep 1st and 15. Drinking Water Quality And The Contamination of Public Drinking Supplies Hey Bryan, I moved the Page Drinking Water Quality & The Contamination of Public Drinking Supplies to Drinking Water Quality And The Contamination of Public Drinking Supplies removing "&" because it was creating trouble in uberpatrolling. edit Postings to ETI

You asked if there are other parts of 3DN that I think should be posted at ETI - I think of it as an interconnected whole so it is difficult to know when to start and stop. I would ask that you note the source in each of those postings - otherwise you are free to use any that you find useful in any way you wish.

edit Portal:Entrepreneur_Education

Hi Bryan. I agree, this is a better way of organising the business writing bit. I'd been worrying over how to incorporate it into what is otherwise a very college/ university aimed portal, but a close interlinking now should do the trick.

I've read the business plan guidelines, and they look great. I can imagine them being very helpful indeed. Let me know once you've got something of a structure down, and we can set up a navigation bar as we just introduced for the Writing Portal. Oh, and a quick request: could you put in some intro text or caption for the Youtube video? Just so users know what they're getting when they click.

It's looking great. Thanks for taking interest and putting in the time! I think it's going to end up a fantastic resource for writers. FatimaRaja 04:30, 5 September 2007 (PDT)

edit NewSkin Beta Preview

Hello Bryan!

We've noticed your contributions and are glad to be on the AboutUs team with you! As an ActiveMember your energy and ideas determine our future direction. One way that ActiveMembers stay "in the loop" is to participate in the beta previews of large new changes to the site before they are generally released.

Today we're starting a limited beta preview of an earthy NewSkin intended to reflect the alive and growing AboutUs community. The NewSkin is designed to feel wholesome and connected with the real world. This choice was made to reassure the many folks who feel that the internet is a "scary place" where mean people hide behind fake identities and shout insults at each other. We hope that the NewSkin evokes our values in a way that helps visitors and members alike feel grounded in true community.

We'd love your help putting the NewSkin through its paces! To give it a whirl you'll need to be logged in. Once you are logged in, go to "my preferences" | "skin" and select "design". Don't forget to then click the "save" button! You can always go back to the current skin by selecting "aboutus" via the same steps.

Your feedback on the new look for aboutus will help ensure that it has a maximally positive impact when we roll it out. Thanks for being a valuable member of the community, we look forward to your feedback on the NewSkin page!

Warm Regards,
the DevelopmentTeam

edit Thoughts about E.E.P.

I've been thinking about the Entrepreneur Education Portal and how that fits in with three dimensional networking. One of my early descriptions on O.net is transcribed at Whole System and talks about the difference between "throughput" designs and "roundput" designs - linear and spherical thinking. Is there a way to incorporate that into Entrepreneur Education? David Braden

That is pretty sweet! That's a really great looking portal layout of sorts. I like how the logo of the globe seems to pop out from behind the main page. The image of "Epiphany Deception" may look a little better higher up in the Internal Links box, maybe. Really great work!!!! And I just realize that the shade of green you chose seems to perfectly match the grass of the NewSkin, that's beautiful! KristinaWeis 13:23, 6 September 2007 (PDT)

Yeah, looks good. One request would be that if you're leaving message on IP talk pages to put {{TempTalkPage}} at the top - this helps us out to clarify and more importantly so all these pages can be periodically deleted as IPs change, etc. Here's an example of a note I left earlier for an IP: User talk:76.194.223.118. edit The Conundrum

Well, you mentioned u couldn't answer the conundrum. Basically when i did the computability course i cam across this question: how do u build a program that can look at itself? To answer that, one comes across this example, which shows how to write an infinite program.

copy the line below twice, the first time without quotes "copy the line below twice, the first time without quotes"

copy the line below twice, the first time without quotes "copy the line below twice, the first time without quotes"

copy the line below twice, the first time without quotes "copy the line below twice, the first time without quotes"

and so on... Basically the line without the quotes becomes an instruction, which commands to print a line and also writes the next instruction. so you get a program that never terminates. this is possible if you have an interpreter which interprets the program line by line, executing the instructions as it meets them.Umar Sheikh

edit Time for a chat

Bryan,

I am interested in setting up a chat. I do think it would be worth while for you to check out NED first - as I am not sure what kind of traffic we could attract to a portal about our ideas. If you joined NED we could hold the threaded discussion in public with significant traffic of people interested in building a better world - we could also exchange private messages there - or we could also do an e-mail exchange: d-braden at comcast.net - are you on skype?. edit Coaching Organization Formation

Bryan -- The Stop Foolish Rounding page is my small experiment in using AboutUs as a medium for the growth of organization. I'm expecting the process to proceed as follows:

  • Individual has some passion for a subject, but not the energy to pursue it.
  • Individual rants somewhere, then converts that rant to an organizational seed at AboutUs.
  • Google finds the seed and introduces the page name into the internet's vocabulary.
  • Individual spreads the rant around in many circles, suggests folks just google for it.
  • A loose community forms around the page, with diverse ideas as to the way forward.
  • The page, and mechanisms like Consensus Polling, tightens the community.
  • The community acts yielding some positive result that wouldn't have happened any other way.

I mention this because your occasional gentle coaching on that page would be much appreciated so long as it is consistent with this plan. I've done the first two steps. Now we wait to see how quickly google picks it up and how highly AboutUs places in response to a "rounding" query. -- Ward 12:53, 8 September 2007 (PDT)

Hello,

I am not sure if it is you who has the section on cluster headaches or not but the link led me to you. At anyrate I just wanted to let you know that I suffered from Cluster headaches from age 8 until age 29 and was finally diagnosed. The doctor put me on "Klan" (I think that is how it was spelled - it was I believe a medication normally prescribed for high blood pressure even though I don't suffer from high blood pressure). I took the medication for about 2 weeks or less and the cluster headaches disappeared completely. I have never suffered from another one. I am now 45.

edit Clusters and Entrepreneurs

Hi Bryan! My_Cluster_Page is very interesting indeed; I suffer from migraines myself, which are usually easily controlled by medication but at times escalate to something resembling a cluster headache. I see there are already people who've responded with their own stories, and I wonder if there is a community out there that could benefit from this sort of discussion. A place where stories and experiences could be exchanged?

You got a good start on it. You need to re-arrange the main menu. Seems out of whack a bit. If you email me I can send you a copy of NGMenu. I purchased it so I might as well make the best of it. It is a easy to use DHTML menu maker for Joomla. You will also find on Joomla Main Site a Google translation module which is the one I use. You also might want to consider using a SEO for Joomla such as Artio SEF. I have tried many of them and this one works the best. It really increases your ratings on Google and also useJoomap to set your google site map for Google Analytics. Email me back with your email again and I will send the Menu Maker. --DannyG | talk 07:32, 16 September 2007 (PDT)

It means a lot less work and is more perfect then designing our own Translation engine. You know what is great about it? Still comes up in a stat program as yours. --DannyG | talk 07:36, 16 September 2007 (PDT)

edit Stackzilla.com

Hey Brian,

I've been thinking about your note on Stackzilla.com (not fitting so well with the new skin). I've got a couple of thoughts on how to fix this up, but let me talk to Vinh tomorrow (Monday), I think he was talking about changing the minimum size of a page (bumping it up a little bit) and that actually would solve your problem (I think).

Beyond that, why don't we try to ping each other on IRC tomorrow (Monday) to chat about other idea/thoughts on how to make this page work. There are plenty of things I can think of that would be much better than reverting all the hard work you've done.

This is a pretty good idea and nice work up on it. I think that Christophe certainly set forth a great model for how this can be done if we ended up with an active member that knows both English and another language well. It might be a good idea to really try to reach out to any new users that are editing in another language, perhaps a welcome in both English and LanguageX (via Google translation) and mention something about possible translation help. I'm watching the page to see what is added, but I'm excited to see what ideas are raised and I think this is a great direction for AboutUs and logically makes sense as the wiki grows. edit hi

hi, Bryan. Thanks for welcoming me and i certainly will try to find time to go through this site "deeply" to know what and how to do, because i feel a big dunno here, and it took me like 2-3 minutes to find how to respond.

Thank you. Nataly. how do you prevent site from some crippy-minded people who like to harm or do some stupid things? I mean as far as i found out today, that anyone can come and make changes to anyones profie and site.

Have a good day. User:Wcnmk

edit Re: pdxMindshare.com

Well it's not my page, so why should I object? ;-) I think the logo at the top & the link in the title are definite improvements, though. -- Llywrch 15:07, 19 September 2007 (PDT)
