It has been developed and is updated daily by author and astronomer David Darling. Regular users include aerospace companies, NASA and other space agencies, the military, and academic institutions, as well as a broad swathe of the general public. Much of the information is based on David's books, especially his encyclopedias (see below).

The website first went online in 1999 and has grown to more than 8,500 pages and a million words. It includes the award-winning Encyclopedia of Astrobiology, Astronomy, and Spaceflight.
