About Deepsquatter

This is where you will find out about me. I'm married to my high school/college sweetheart, Cheryl. We've got two little baby squatters; Ava and Samantha. I'm 37 (as of 2002) and although I've been lifting weights for a while I've only been powerlifting, per se, since 1994. I am, like a lot of other lifters, a frustrated ex football player. I played left guard in high school at about 150 lbs. I was pretty good but I realized that most college football programs weren't looking for offensive linemen that were 5'6" tall and might someday fill out to be 165 lbs. These days I only regret that I didn't just give it a try to see what I could do. I mean, hey, if I couldn't cut it at least I would have known for sure.... anyway, I did a little training in high school. When I went to college, I stopped. Soon I started getting soft and weak. I DID NOT LIKE THAT. I started training semi seriously in Dec. of 1987. It seems like it has been forever but I am finally able to keep my weight over 190 lbs. My goal is 215 in good shape (under 10% body fat). Oddly enough, I decided to start powerlifting after an injury. My chiropractor got me started (talk about job security). Actually, he introduced me to Mike Musto. Mike taught me how to sumo in his garage. Quite a few Northern California lifters have started out in Mike's Garage. (Thanks Mike) Anyway, I got hooked after watching my first meet. I went to watch Dave Van"Bocken" lift at the ADFPA Masters Nationals in late 1993. I was amazed at how much weight the old guys were lifting. The thing I liked was that there was a great deal of camaraderie between competitors. Guys in the same weight classes were pushing each other to make their lifts. I had never seen that type of sportsmanship at a BB contest. I entered my first meet a few months later......and I never looked back. I like the idea of setting goals and breaking them. You can't always win but you can always try to set PRs. So far I've done OK. I'm pretty good at the state level so I'm going to have to step it up and move up to the National Level. That's where the really strong guys are. Stokes, McCaulliffe, Keyhea, etc. Right now these guys would eat my lunch but I'm pretty hungry............ It will really get thick if I go up to the 220s. But I do love to compete. I will give a summary of my competitive history below.........................

(update: 11/97) Well, I made the move to the 220s earlier this year and did ok. I made a 1700+ total in April and I'm sure I will go well over 1800 in '98. I injured my knee (MCL) in July but it is on the mend and as October I'm squatting 500+ for reps without any wraps. I'm feeling great and I'm looking forward to the '98 season.

(update: 9/98) I'm an official 220 now. My weight has been over 205 for a whole year. I've done 4 meets this year and with the exception of a severe butt whoopin' at Nationals I'm doing pretty well. Still, the whoopin' was expected and the lifters that beat up on me were excellent. I promise a better showing in '99.
