- Bhutan is the world's only surviving Vajrayana Buddhist nation, a rich repository of traditions, culture and contemplative disciplines that have been painstakingly nurtured over the centuries and tempered by the winds of time. In fact, it is often joked that 'Dharma' is Bhutan's main export as many lamas frequently travel overseas to transmit our wisdom traditions. However, times are changing, and Bhutan itself is at the crossroads of a profound and tumultuous transformation. A modern generation is struggling to find an identity among the shifting sands of dynamic and profound social and political change. Traditions and culture are increasingly overwhelmed by the onslaught of consumerist and urban trends, and established patterns of living are changing beyond recognition. As a result, our youth are caught between the banks of the old and the crashing waves of the new. Pursuit of a meaningful life that harmonizes past traditions with a modern outlook is a daily dilemma.
