20060614.1305: My comments a couple of days ago about computer games were really the beginning of a larger thought about entertainment of all kinds. As Toren put it in a letter, "same candy, different box" was pretty much the problem.
But I've had that problem with other kinds of entertainment, too. I never was very much into movies, but there were a few I went to in theaters when they first came out. But the last movie I saw in a theater was the first Matrix movie, and that was quite a while ago. It's not just that the experience of going to a theater is unpleasant (though it is, for a variety of reasons) but also because the movies themselves don't grab me.
Hollywood has been making movies now for nearly a hundred years. There are tens of thousands of titles listed on the IMDB. And it's gotten to be like chess openings -- there simply isn't much left new to say. Virtually everything we see now is derivative -- some of it blatantly so, being sequels, or remakes, or adaptations of material from other media. But it's not just that they're derivative because they've mostly mined-out the lode; they're deliberately derivative.
