Description
Denali's Landscape Denali National Park and Preserve has over six million acres of extremely diverse terrain including the highest mountain in North America --- Mount McKinley --- which rises 20,320 feet and overshadows the surrounding mountain peaks of the magnificent Alaskan Range. Despite harsh winters of eight to nine months, Denali is considered a sub-arctic desert. Rare plant life --- taiga and tundra --- and flowering plants are abundant.
Denali's Wildlife Moose, caribou, Dall sheep, grizzly bears and wolves freely roam in Denali. Smaller mammals include ground squirrels, hoary marmots, pikas and the snowshoe hare. These little mammals can be seen throughout the park and are important to Denali's food chain.
Denali's Natural History Bands of Athabaskan, Ahtna, Tanana and Koyukon were among the many Native Americans who lived and thrived in Denali's unique environment. Goldseekers rushed to Denali in the late 1800s and early 1900s. And Charles Sheldon, a railroad executive and avid outdoorsmen, made it his mission to see that the incredible landscape and awesome wildlife were protected.
