Title

Native American Indian Drums - Tarahumara Indian Drums Hand Painted

Description

The designs reflect southwestern images. The drawing technique used on the drums was developed to enhance the natural beauty of the drums, and to respect the integrity of the Native Americans who make the drums. A protective UV and moisture resistant clear acrylic coating is applied to the picture side of the drum.

The drums are hand made by the Tarahumara Indians. These Native Americans live in a spectacular part of the Sierra Madre Mountains known as Copper Canyon. They are the largest indigenous tribe remaining on the North American continent, and the largest Indian tribe in Northern Mexico. Tarahumara Indians are the most isolated Native American Tribe in North America.

Tarahumara Indians are very nature-oriented and spiritual people. An important part of their culture is the large hoop drums (compara). To ensure the arrival of good spring planting weather, in mid February the men begin beating drums. At least one drum is sounding for 40 continuous days and nights. The night before Easter Sunday, all the drums sound in unison and then go silent.
