Welcome to the Hot Diggitty Dog Great Pyrenees Web Site!

Description

The Great Pyrenees or Pyrenean Mountain Dog is a large dog that was used (and still used today) as a livestock guardian. The Pyr watches the sheep in his flock and protects the sheep from predators such as wolves or coyotes. The Pyr's dense coat gives him protection against these predators. The calm Pyr, lies with the sheep and slowly patrols the fence perimeter of the farm.

Temperament - The Pyrenees is a very calm and gentle dog. When they get regular exercise, they will mostly sleep the rest of the day. They are not hyper dogs that demand all of your attention. They are friendly, but they like to be on their own, but close by. You should have a fenced-in yard with a Pyr. The like to roam, to protect the whole neighbourhood. If a Pyrenees must be tied on a leash in a yard, he should be closely supervised or the strong Pyr may try to break off his leash to explore.

Size - The Pyrenees is a large dog, but they look larger than they are. They weigh about 80-130 lbs, with the Males being larger. They are quite tall...they can easily put their head down on your dining room table. If a pyrenees were to stand on his back legs, he could put his paws on the shoulders of an adult. With a dog this large and powerful, it is important to train your dog the basics. Your dog will need to know that he cannot jump on people or pull on the leash.
