Diner City, online guide to classic diners and the American Roadside

Description

I was about 12 years old when I developed my facination with diners. In the early 1980's, there were plenty of stainless steel and porcelin enamel diners to be found in my home state of New Jersey. Many have since been demolished. Others have been covered over with brickface, stoneface or wood which is quite a shame. The original materials are virtually maintainence free and are an essential part of the classic diner look. A few NJ diners have been moved to the Midwest or overseas. Every year at least a dozen vintage diners in New Jersey and other diner-rich states such as Massachusetts are being junked, moved, or given hideous makeovers. Watching this happen time and again, I found myself travelling all around the United States with my camera and plenty of film. Over the past few years, I have photographed hundreds of diners, with the hope that my images might foster some appreciation for these historical treasures.

The overwhelming success of fast food chain restaurants is disheartening. For the past few decades Americans have been bombarded with hypnotic advertising, consequently marching like sheep to the nearest highway eyesore for a quick, low-quality bite to eat. The signs on the world's most sucessful restaurant should read "Over 99 Billion Brainwashed."

The quintessential diner is a small, family-owned and operated establishment which serves no more than about 50 people at one time. Counter seating is an essential element and this configuration makes the diner more than just a place to eat; a diner is also a place for conversation, a community center in some ways. Perhaps this is why Bill Clinton and Bob Dole both chose classic diners as a campaign rally site during the last Presidential election. A diner is one of the best places to "meet the locals." The qunintessential diner manages to be fast and efficient while providing meals which are fresh and cooked to order. The cook is skillful and takes pride in the modest food he/she prepares; it's not a teenage robot who has been programmed to push buttons. You will never find the world's most sophisticated cusine in a diner, but more times than not you can look forward to a simple, wholesome meal which will undoutedly be more statisfying than anything you can find at McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's, Taco Bell, KFC, Arby's, Hardee's, Jack In The Box, Carl's Jr., Long John Silver's, Checker's, Roy Roger's, Dunkin Dounuts, or any of the all-too-well known franchises cluttering the major thoroughfares of Anytown, USA. Diners offer quality food, not food technology.
