What is "donotbuyfrommyshop.com [1]”?

In other words why set up an online shop which publicizes its own rivals?

I sell new and second-hand computer products in my online shop, but once a week I sell all kinds of used goods at “Porta Portese” the most famous open-air second-hand market of my city, where you can find all kinds of weird stuff. This way, I can earn a bit extra, and place some of my excess merchandise instead of just sitting at home on a Sunday.

But there are two big problems:

  1. Selling second-hand stuff isn’t a big earner… and it’s usually quite stressful!
  2. It’s difficult to sell new computer products, with all the shops and mega-stores stocking a wider range of products than mine at lower prices.

So I had a great idea when two curious (and rather unpleasant!) incidents took place within a week of each other:

1: One day, a friend called me, saying he had a load of second-hand things to sell. I told him to put them on sale on my stand at the market. Some of his stuff was similar to what I usually sell, such as computer components and as a result, my friend became a sales competitor. In fact his products distracted some potential clients from my own computer wares, and to top it all, he managed to sell everything without giving me a penny! (Thank God he didn’t have that much to sell!)

2: A few days later I decided to let the advertisement banners distributed by a famous search engine, onto the homepage of my online shop. To start with there were no problems, but after a while I realized that, thanks to the automatic matching of key words in the text of my site, the banners were often adverts for competitors selling similar products to my own, and occasionally at even lower prices! To add insult to injury many of the visitors to my site are now asking me about the products advertised by these competitors!

So I asked myself... “how can it be possible that products sold by others are so much better and more attractive”? I thought “if you can’t beat them, then join them!” and I decided to join forces with my hitherto hated and despised competitors!

Then, one Sunday, I suggested to a fellow market stall-holder that if I put a photo of one of his products on my site, with a link on how to reach him, maybe he could do the same for me on his site! After two weeks of advertising each other’s products we had some excellent results. So I asked myself, what if I start doing only this? What if I concentrate on advertising my competitors? (For a modest fee!) I wouldn’t be so stressed out choosing, testing and buying second-hand products for resale... I wouldn’t have to invest in new products which would quickly lose their value, as is the rule with computer merchandise.

And that’s what finally persuaded me to set up the world’s first online shop that advertises its competitors!

Here’s what I decided to do on internet.

  1. Sell advertising space with the sole aim of efficiently promoting both my old and new competitors’ services and products, helping them to increase their sales by buying space in the yellow advertising area and giving them the possibility of finding a wide range of clients and buyers for their products.
  2. Attract potential buyers by inventing an online store filled with products which aren’t actually for sale, but which are illustrated, described, advertised and catalogued, in order to act as “bait”, by diverting the users of search engines by means of the usual automatic matching mechanisms and systems.
  3. Entertain online visitors to the virtual store with weird and funny products, both real and imaginary, while giving them the chance to display their own crazy products and services on-line, and gain visibility for their own blogs or no-profit sites so that they can get in touch with other users. “Donotbuyfrommyshop” will be the one and only truly “virtual” store, because the products in the various categories of the "no-sales zone” will not be for sale and many of them will be completely imaginary!
