Description

We are presenting a pictorial documentation of the Ami Skapi Pikuni Homeland. The original territory once controlled by the Blackfeet Nation consisted of mountain ranges and waterways in the Missouri, Musselshell and Yellowstone River basins. The Blackfeet Territory originally extended between the Saskatchewan River in present day Canada and the Yellowstone River in Montana. In addition to the Ami Skapi Pikuni, the Blackfeet Bands in Canada are, Sikini, Pikuni, Kainai and Siksika.

The photos of the Ami Skapi Pikuni Homeland have been digitally enhanced to show the landscape in a pristine state, as it once appeared when the Blackfeet ruled Montana. Each geological landmark is accompanied by its' Blackfeet name as well as its' current, colonial name.

Double Runner Gallery is located in East Glacier Park, Montana and is owned by Larry M. Reevis, a member of the Blackfeet Tribe. The Gallery opened to the public in June of 2004 but the concept for the photo project had been in the mind of Mr. Reevis for many years. It was the oral history passed down to him by his Grandfather which enabled him to participate as both guide and inspiration for the photography documenting the geographic elements which make up the original territory of his people.
